The winter months can stretch before us like an endless gray canvas which often leads to the blues. And although it may be March, spring can still feel far away. Here’s how the use of fashion, beauty and spiritual rituals can make these last days of winter turn into a seasonal renewal of self-discovery and unexpected joy.

Wardrobe as a Mood Elevator

Instead of reaching for the same old, dark, heavy pieces, consider adding a gorgeous jewel-toned scarf, or a hat to transform a neutral outfit into something springy. Emerald green, burgundy or royal blue can bring a warmth to your complexion while giving your outfit a sophisticated pop of color.

Layer with intention. Add a chic cardigan or faux leather jacket over a turtleneck sweater. Don’t be afraid to mix and match textures — a cable-knit scarf with a sleek wool coat or a silk blouse under a tailored velvet blazer. Now that everything’s on sale, consider investing in a coat or jacket in a bold color like red or turquoise, that makes every errand feel like an occasion.

I have two winter jackets — one is blue, the other black. I often choose the blue style because when I wear it I feel lighter and brighter, and I’m more encouraged to embrace outdoor treks and activities. Even a trip to the grocery store feels more fun.

Beauty Rituals as Self-Care

Choose rich moisturizers with nourishing ingredients like shea butter, hyaluronic acid and ceramides to help lock in moisture and combat one of the most noticeable effects of winter: dry skin. A face cream with a subtle, uplifting scent of rose or neroli can transform a basic moisturizing into an aromatherapy session.

Dry body brushing before your morning shower stimulates circulation and lymphatic flow while providing an energizing start to cold winter days. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to replenish the dry and brittle hair which can be the result of cold weather. Consider trying out different hair accessories, such as colorful barrettes or headbands to add flair to your look. Keep your makeup soft and fresh, using highlighter and a pink blush. A bold lip can add a touch of sunny vitality even on the cloudiest days.

Spiritual Practices for Inner Warmth

On the day that I was writing this it happened to be snowing and frigid outside. I actually welcomed the chance to stay inside and cocoon. (In the spring I feel guilty if I’m not out enjoying the sunshine, despite whatever mood I may be in.)

Nature slows down in winter and so can we. It’s a great time to create a morning ritual — such as meditating, journaling or simply sitting quietly with your first cup of coffee — that sets the tone for a peaceful day. Bring nature indoors with plants, which not only purify the air but add a touch of life to your home.

A gentle walk in a nearby park or a peaceful stroll around your neighborhood will help you reconnect with the world around you — and get you out of your head. And at day’s end, one of the most soothing rituals you can indulge in is a warm bath. Add Epsom salts or essential oils to create a tranquil environment that helps you relax both physical and mentally.

As you soak, practice deep breathing to release stress and tension. Take time each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for — whether it’s your health or your loved ones or just the beauty of this moment.

Community and Connection

While solitude can be nurturing, isolation isn't. Create regular opportunities for meaningful connections. Start a weekly coffee gathering with friends where you share not just challenges but moments of joy and discovery. Use technology intentionally to maintain connections. Schedule regular video calls with distant friends or family, but make them special — perhaps enjoy the same tea together or light the same scented candle during your conversations to create a sense of shared space despite physical distance.

Moving Forward with Grace

Finally, remember that winter, like every season of nature and life, has its purpose. Instead of pushing against its energy, work with it. Use these last few weeks of the season to deepen your relationship with yourself, refine your personal style and strengthen your spiritual practices.
