Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Everything you need to know about The Ethel.
  • What is The Ethel?

The Ethel is a free lifestyle newsletter sent out every Wednesday, and an online community inspired by AARP’s amazing founder,  Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus.  The newsletter celebrates women over 50. But whether you’re in your 50s, 60s, 70s, or 80s, you’ll receive the very best stories related to sex, health, beauty, aging, and relationships, written by women just like you. You can also enjoy The Ethel right here on aarpethel.com , as well as on Facebook.

  • So what is The Ethel's mission?

We want to smash the stereotypes surrounding aging and come together as a community so that we can be loud, be heard and be connected. Let’s celebrate life and all that’s in store for us, while also being honest about the challenges we face. So join us today in a place where women own the conversation.

  • What is Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus known for?

After retiring from her position as a Los Angeles high school principal in 1944, the award-winning educator began a second career that ultimately had a far bigger impact on society. She became an activist and organizer on behalf of other retirees and older Americans, fighting to improve their financial security, their health care and other services that they need. • Is there a print version of The Ethel that you can send me

The Ethel is a digital-only publication that you can enjoy on a computer, smartphone or tablet.

  • Why is AARP publishing a newsletter and website focused on women 50 and older?

To best support those 50 and older, AARP needs to “get you.” AARP aims to connect with the people we serve — people from all walks of life — in an authentic and personalized way. So, we offer unique and varied programs, platforms and resources. With 38 million members, we tailor additional offerings for rural Americans, veterans and active-duty military, Spanish speakers, caregivers, LGBTQ adults, those living with diabetes and on and on.

  • I’d like to write for The Ethel. Where can I send story ideas?

You can send a link to your professional website, podcast, blog or portfolio of published work, along with your pitch, to aarpethel@aarp.org . Please put “pitch” in the subject line. We are ALWAYS happy to receive ideas. Because ours is a digital publication, we are looking for the honest, the personal and the surprising — but in pieces that are typically no more than 500 to 750 words. We want the uncommon, the stuff you don’t see everywhere else. (Always look at the newsletter before pitching.) We’re interested in the topics that interest you: sex, relationships, beauty, lifestyle, grandparenting, and how to stay relevant as you age.

  • How can I advertise on The Ethel?

Just contact us by filling out this form  and please put “advertising” or “sponsorship” in the subject line to receive more information.
